- January 1, 2024: in Nov 2023 JFDA published a new extension of implementation deadline until January 1st, 2024, for the DataMatrix and serialization of secondary packaging for regulated pharmaceutical products.
- September 30, 2023: JFDA published in July 2023 a new circular on extension of implementation deadline until 30th September 2023 for the DataMatrix and serialization of secondary packaging for regulated pharmaceutical products.
- January 2023: JFDA published updated circular extending the compliance deadline to June 30, 2023
- July 2022: JFDA published a new circular on serialization: 2D DM with Item-Level Serialisation required. Deadline for implementation has been extended to December 31, 2022
- July 1, 2018: GS1 standard established: GS1 2D DM (batch level)
- June 1, 2017: Beginning of transitional period to GS1 standard; 1D / Linear barcode and/or a GS1 Data Matrix
